SICILY
7 DAY SUGGESTED ITINERARY
(Departure
from Palermo)
DAY 1: Set sail for Cefalú, a tiny port beneath a bare
and massive limestone cliff that falls sheer to the sea. See the spacious
Piazza del Duomo and the magnificent mosaics in the Cathedral.
DAY 2: Sail to the Aeolian Islands, where your first port of
call is Filicudi. Explore the basalt caves on the west coast.
DAY 3: Sail to Salina, a small island with two extinct volcanoes,
then go on to Panarea for the night. Here you will find and extraordinarily
well preserved Bronze Age village site.
DAY 4: Today's island is Lipari, the largest of the Aeolian group.
Climb the rocky promontory to the Castello. Within are the Cathedral
and three other interesting churches, plus an archeological museum.
DAY 5: Sail south across the narrow Bocche, past the 200-foot
high basalt cliff called Pietralunga, to Vulcano. This is an excellent
place to study volcanic activity - there are three craters, and the
water of the harbor sometimes boils from underwater emissions of steam.
They say it's therapeutic!
DAY 6: Sail back to Sicily and Cefalú. Find a cozy cafè
for your evening meal.
DAY
7: Return to Palermo.
